Circa 1885 or so, spectacles (reading glasses) got a huge upgrade when the flexible "Pince-Nez" spring loaded nose piece was invented to help ensure that your glasses stayed in place while wearing them.
This newly invented nose piece kept the glasses in place by a gentle "pinch" versus the simple arch between lenses and zero nose piece.
It was quite the invention back in the day!
These antique spectacles circa 1885 to 1900 are gold filled and have the flexible "Pince-Nez" nose piece.
They also include a fine gold chain with ear piece so if your glasses did unexpectedly fall; the chain/earpiece would rescue them to avoid damages.
The glass lenses in this pair look somewhat cloudy in the photo but are not. They are clear and in excellent condition. The lenses are quite thick so the prescription is strong. The nose pieces are still functional.
They measure approximately 3-3/4 inches side to side and the lenses are 1-1/8 by 1-1/2 inch ovals. The rescue chain is about 4.5 inches long.
